Ignoring The Hunger

“I wasn't sure what to expect from another dystopian survival story, but Bennett hooked me from page one. The "feral cycle" concept is genuinely unsettling — the idea that regular people turn predator every thirty days creates this constant dread that never lets up. Monte is a compelling protagonist precisely because he's not some action hero. He's just a guy trying to do right by his family, and watching him wrestle with impossible moral choices felt painfully real. The mystery of how he ended up injured in the woods kept me turning pages even during slower sections. Bennett doesn't shy away from the brutality of this world, but it never feels gratuitous. Every violent moment serves the story and Monte's transformation. My only gripe? I wanted more backstory on how the cycles started, but I suspect that's coming in later books. If you loved The Road but want something with more visceral action, grab this.”

“This was a very compelling read. The worldbuilding was very interesting and quite creative. A world where all are regularly, and many are constantly, consumed by cannibalistic urges is a terrifying concept that rendered me unable to put the book down. It was thrilling to watch it unfold before me as I read. The characters had lots of depth to them, and I found myself getting attached to Monte, along with thinking his plight sympathetic and even heartbreaking. His emotions — from terror to rage to disgust and, occasionally, joy — and strong connection to his family all felt genuine and made him lovable. The action throughout was exciting and often had me on the edge of my seat. I was never bored while reading; twists and turns just kept coming to make it all an exhilarating ride. This book is absolutely worth a read. I recommend buying and reading!”

“Where do I even start?! I felt so many things during this book and I am so wrecked by that ending! Set in a kind of post-apocalyptic world with a man who wakes lost and confused trying to get back to his family. Without spoiling it, this has everything you are looking for. Just be prepared to cry. Monte, you are an amazing father. Dirk, you are a good son. The only problem I have with this book right now is there isn't a second book yet. I am dying to know what happens next!”

“This story is so unique! I've never read anything like it before. Monte is a character that I believe a lot of men could relate to in the beginning if they were in this situation. All he wants is to find his family. Sometimes the story can feel a little slow moving, but that's only because Braxton is getting ready and setting up to hit us with either more backstory or a big upcoming event. I can't wait to read book 2!!”

“I really loved the first book, so I jumped straight into this ARC from Braxton. No spoilers, but this one switches POV and I actually really liked that — it added a lot to the story. It was cool seeing how everything has evolved with the hungry and feral and how people are surviving now. I flew through this one, couldn't put it down. That ending had me literally saying "oh my god" out loud. Definitely need the next book ASAP.”

“I was surprised how different this book is from the first one, and I wasn't disappointed! This is about Teresa's story and her trying to help her family after a tragedy. The city claims to provide safety and shelter as long as you follow their rules. She meets Kylin, who ends up revealing dark secrets of the city. Unfortunate events occurred, and the ending had me shocked! I need book 3 ASAP! Such a great series.”
